Samhain - summers end (and how I fell in love on Halloween)

Updated: Oct 26

All hallows eve - the time when people believe we are closest to those who have passed from human world - it is also our wedding anniversary so holds an extra special place in my pumpkin heart.

Halloween and October has always been one of my favourite times of year - the cosy jumper weather, carving pumpkins and any excuse to get out the fancy dress box. For many years I have loved Tim Burton and all the master pieces he has created (not just movies - check out his books) - so naturally Halloween falls into line with his weird and wonderful style. Skip ahead a few years and I first met my husband early October (good sign already), without me saying anything about my love of pumpkins and costumes, he took me on our first date on Halloween. Best night ever, and no, we didn't do anything spooky, he took me to a gorgeous theatre in Manchester and we laughed a lot at a play about the worst beach in Ireland. A few years on, and now fully appreciating my love of 31st, he proposed on Halloween and we set our wedding for exactly a year later. It sounds very romantic right, and it all was, I also suspect, if all our love dates are the same, its easier for him to remember! A wedding not to be forgotten, as it included a ghost tour and all guests carved love pumpkins, I smile just thinking of our day (13 years ago this year - magic)

Back to Samhain, summers end, we are now at the half way point between autumn equinox and winter solstice and marks the transition towards winter. Many believe, that at this time of the year, we are the closest to connecting to the spirit world and connect to our guides and spirits easier. Costumes came about as people wore disguises in the hope the cheeky spirits and faeries would believe them to spirits also and not cause mischief. The costumes also also allowed people to play tricks on each other and blame it in the mischievous spirits - and this is where the dressing up and Trick or Treat comes from.

How can you connect to your soul at this time of year?

  • Learn from the past - honour those who came before you and all you have learnt from them. Look to any repeated behaviour from the generations before you, is it time to cut those cords?

  • Light a candle and create an alter to honour parts of you that are ready to set free and allow space for new energy to be born. Thank them for the lessons and breath deep into new you.

  • Connecting to Magic

    - What is magical about you? Write at least 5 things

    - What do you share that no one else can?

    - Have you lost touch with your magic? How can you reconnect to the sparkle and power within you?

    - Sit with your intuition - invite it up to speak up loud and clear, through messages, signs or feelings.

Thank you for reading and connecting with me and my wandering thoughts - keep an eye on social media as more than likely you will see a fancy dress costume or 2
