Why do we dress up at Halloween?

Halloween holds a special place in my heart, our first date, our engagement and also our wedding....possibly this is so my husband has no excuses to forget the date...but I really love this time of year. I also love any excuse for fancy dress!

But why do we dress up on Halloween? Maybe its something that has yet to cross your mind.

Long ago, at Samhain, our ancestors believed, and we still do believe, the veil between worlds grew thin. The distance between our human world and the spiritual world was short or non existent. I truly believe, that we are always connected to other dimensions but that it for another blog...

It was thought that at this time, spirits and ancestors wandered freely, visiting the living, causing mischief and playing tricks on the mortals. So, to protect themselves from mischievous spirits, people wore disguises —animal skins, masks, and cloaks — to blend in, to confuse the spirits, and to honour them. They believed the mischievous imps and spirits would leave them alone, if they thought they were one of them. Over time, this became the tradition we now know as ‘fancy dress’ at Halloween.

The root of this story is sacred — an act of reverence for the unseen, and a reminder

that we, too, walk between worlds, and the spirit world is so close to us.

As you prepare your costumes and paint your faces...maybe ponder on this thought,

Is it time to release the masks you wear and show your true self?

Are you hiding your light and authenticity behind a cloak?

Is it time to release the disguises and show the world your truth?

Samhain blessings today my beautiful souls and a happy Hallow-versary to my husband
